Losing a beloved pet is one of the most profound experiences of grief a person can have. For many people, the bond with their animal is unlike any human relationship — unconditional and irreplaceable. And when that animal is gone, the questions that remain can feel unbearable: Did they know how much I loved them? Are they okay? Did I make the right decisions at the end?
A pet medium session offers a way to seek answers to those questions — not through imagination or wishful thinking, but through an actual energetic connection with the animal who has passed on.
I'm Michelle Hawk, a professional animal communicator and pet psychic based in Portland, Oregon. Deceased pet communication is some of the most meaningful work I do, and I want to share with you what it is, how it works, and what you might expect if you're considering a session.
What Is a Pet Medium?
A pet medium is a practitioner who can communicate with animals who have passed on. The word "medium" refers to the ability to act as an intermediary — in this case, between a living person and the spirit of their animal companion.
This is different from what most people think of as a traditional psychic reading. A pet medium session is not about predicting the future or reading your energy. It's specifically about forming an energetic connection with an animal who is no longer in their physical body and receiving whatever they want to communicate — reassurance, messages, specific details, love.
Pet medium work is part of the broader practice of animal communication — the same energetic and intuitive connection I use with living animals, applied to animals who have transitioned. The mechanics are essentially the same. The information that comes through is just as specific, just as verifiable, and just as real.
How Does Deceased Pet Communication Work?
Animal communication — including with deceased animals — works energetically. The connection doesn't require physical presence, proximity, or even a recent passing. What it requires is an energetic link, which I establish through a clear photo of your animal and my own intuitive connection.
The underlying principle is simple: consciousness doesn't end when the physical body takes its final breath. The spirit, personality, memories, and love of your animal remain accessible after death. They may be in a different form, but they are not gone.
When I connect with an animal who has passed, I experience their communication the same way I do with living animals — through images, words or phrases, body sensations, emotions, and a sense of direct knowing. Some animals who have passed communicate with remarkable clarity and immediacy. Others may need a little more time.
One of the most powerful sessions I’ve had with a deceased animal took place many years ago with a dog who had passed away in a tragic accident. His family was devastated, and the dog’s human dad blamed himself for the events that resulted in the dog’s death. As the man told me the story of what happened with tears running down his face, the spirit of his dog came to fill the room with warmth and peace. Everyone felt the visceral flood of energy. The dog offered messages of deep healing and compassion and helped his family feel more peaceful about his death. Crucially, the dog also explained the situation from his perspective, which helped his dad release his self-blame and guilt. Receiving that warmth and connection from their beloved dog helped the family know that he was truly okay and whole in spirit.
What Can You Learn in a Deceased Pet Communication Session?
Every session is different, because every animal is different and every relationship is different. But there are themes that come up again and again in sessions with animals who have passed on.
Confirmation That They Are Well
One of the most common things animals communicate after death is that they are okay — that the transition was not painful, that they feel at peace, that they are free from whatever suffering their body was carrying. For owners who struggled with end-of-life decisions, this confirmation can be profoundly healing.
Specific Details Only You Would Recognize
Animals who have passed often share details that are startlingly specific — a particular spot in the house they loved, a habit or quirk that was entirely their own, a memory from your life together. These details serve as a kind of verification that the connection is real and that it is truly your animal coming through.
Messages They Want You to Have
Animals in sessions frequently have things they want to say — gratitude, reassurance, specific requests for the living animals or people left behind, or simply the communication of love. These messages are often unexpected and almost always moving.
Answers to Unresolved Questions
Many people come to a deceased pet communication session carrying guilt, uncertainty, or unfinished emotional business. Was it the right time? Did they know I was there? Do they forgive me? These are questions I can ask directly, and the answers — whatever they are — tend to bring a sense of resolution that is difficult to find any other way.
When people contact me because a pet has gone missing, sometimes I am able to help them bring their animal home. Unfortunately, many of the missing animals use the session to gently let their humans know that they have passed away. While people are understandably devastated to learn that their pets aren’t coming home, the animals always make sure to share messages of love, care and offer peaceful closure to their people. I recently had a session with a missing cat who brought his mom closure by letting her know that he had left his body, then proceeded to share profound messages about her and their family. She appreciated hearing his personality quirks shining through his communication, and was very moved by his insights, which helped her understand some things more clearly about their family dynamics.
When Should You Book a Deceased Pet Communication Session?
I recommend waiting at least one month after your pet passes before booking a session. There are two reasons for this.
First, the animal itself. I've found that animals, like people, go through a healing process after leaving their bodies — a kind of review, rest, or integration. In the first weeks after passing, their energy is sometimes less available for clear communication. Waiting allows that process to complete and supports a cleaner connection.
Second, your own grief. Strong, fresh grief can affect the quality of communication — not because the connection isn't there, but because intense emotion can make it harder to receive and interpret what comes through clearly. Waiting a month doesn't mean your grief has to be resolved — it just means the sharpest edge of it has softened enough to allow space for the session.
That said, there is no hard rule. Some animals communicate beautifully within days of passing. If you're unsure whether it's the right time, reach out before booking and we can talk through what's right for your situation.
How Is This Different From a Regular Animal Communication Session?
The process is essentially the same. You'll submit a clear, recent photo of your animal with your intake form. During the session — held via Zoom from anywhere in the world, or in person in the Portland, Oregon area — I'll connect with your animal, share what they want to communicate, and work through your questions one at a time.
The main practical difference is timing. With a living animal, there's no waiting period. With an animal who has passed, the one-month recommendation applies. Everything else — the booking process, the session structure, the pricing — is identical.

Is Deceased Pet Communication Real?
This is the question underneath every other question, and I want to answer it honestly: I can't prove it to you. What I can tell you is that in over 20 years of practice and thousands of sessions, the information that comes through from animals who have passed is consistently specific, verifiable, and meaningful in ways that random chance can't account for.
The clients who come in most skeptical are often the ones most surprised by what emerges. Not because I say anything particularly extraordinary, but because the animal says something only the owner would recognize — a detail so specific, so characteristic, so theirs that there is no other explanation that satisfies.
If you're on the fence, I invite you to read what clients say about their experiences with deceased pet communication. Their words are more persuasive than anything I could write here.
A Note on Grief
Grief for a beloved animal is real grief. It doesn't need to be qualified or defended. If you're carrying that grief right now, I want you to know that a session is not about moving on or letting go — it's about connection. Many people find that hearing from their animal doesn't close the door on grief; it transforms it into something softer and more bearable.
If you have questions about whether a session is right for you, or whether it's the right time, please reach out. I'm happy to talk through it before you book anything.
